Selkies Are a Girl’s Best Friend delivered exactly the kind of cozy paranormal, monster-town vibes I was hoping for. The setting feels warm, quirky, and lived-in — the kind of supernatural small town you’d absolutely want to visit (or accidentally get stuck in). There’s also a light mystery element woven into the story, which added intrigue without ever becoming overly tense or stressful.

Audiobook Experience: Mixed but Manageable
I listened to the audiobook for this one, and my experience was a bit mixed. I really enjoyed the female narrator. Her performance felt natural and engaging. Unfortunately, the male narrator didn’t work as well for me. His voice itself was fine, but the book includes a lot of characters with accents (and some common French phrases), and his attempts at those accents were… not great. It pulled me out of the story at times, which was a little disappointing.
POV and Writing Observations
The writing overall was decent and easy to follow, but I did notice some inconsistencies with the POV shifts. The book is set up as a his/hers POV, but occasionally the perspective would briefly switch mid-chapter without a clear transition. It felt less like a stylistic choice and more like the author momentarily losing track of which POV they were in. It wasn’t frequent enough to ruin the experience, but it was noticeable.
Easy to Read as a Standalone

This book is technically part of a series — book three or four, depending on where you look — and I didn’t realize that going in. That said, it reads perfectly well as a standalone. I never felt lost or confused, which speaks to how well the author introduces the world and characters without overwhelming the reader. More than once I found myself thinking two of the background characters must have amazing back stories in the authors mind, only to later realize the tidbits were referring to previous books. I laughed at myself for that one.
Final Thoughts
Despite a few audiobook and POV quirks, I ultimately really liked Selkies Are a Girl’s Best Friend. The cozy paranormal atmosphere, likable characters, and light mystery made for a fun, comforting read. I enjoyed it enough that I’ll be continuing the series, and I’ll be reporting back once I read the next book later this week.
