What Didn’t Quite Work for Me

My one reservation lies with the romance subplot. The emotional bond between Viv and her love interest is genuinely sweet — the affection feels real and the chemistry is warm. However, for me personally, the relationship read more as a deep, meaningful friendship slowly finding its footing than a budding romance. The tenderness between the two characters was lovely, but it never quite organically crossed into romantic territory for me. Had the text not spelled out that a romance was developing, I would have been perfectly happy reading it as an extraordinarily close platonic bond. Honestly, a platonic friendship would have been just as meaningful a story.

This isn’t a flaw so much as a matter of reader interpretation. The feelings between the characters are clearly drawn with care, it’s simply that the type of love being expressed felt a little ambiguous in the telling.

Overall Thoughts

Legends & Lattes is exactly the kind of book you reach for when the world feels like too much. It is gentle and inventive and full of small joys.
