Going into The Undermining of Twyla and Frank, I was both excited and a little nervous. The previous book, The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy, is one of my favorites, so there’s always that worry that a follow-up won’t quite live up to the first story. Thankfully, this novel was a really enjoyable return to the world.

Distinct Characters and Meaningful Relationships

One of the things I loved most about this book is how distinct the characters feel. Twyla and Frank both have strong voices, their own challenges, and a relationship dynamic that feels grounded and authentic. Unlike the previous novel, this isn’t structured as a traditional his/her POV romance. You only see the relationship from Twyla’s POV. It’s more focused on an established relationship and what it means to choose someone you already love.

One Small (Very Personal) Note

Also, as a quick side note: Twyla’s son Wade drove me absolutely insane. He annoyed me the entire time. I’m sure some readers may feel differently, but personally… yeah, he sucked.

A Story About Life, Friendship, and Identity

At its heart, this novel is really about Twyla herself. She’s an adult woman approaching retirement, reflecting on her life, her choices, and her relationships. Her partnership with Frank — both professionally and personally — is central to the story, but the book also highlights her identity beyond romance.

Her friendship and working relationship with her fellow Tanrian Marshal adds another layer to the narrative, making the story feel like it’s about an entire life rather than just a single romantic arc. That perspective felt refreshing and mature compared to many romances.

While I could relate to some of Twyla’s experiences now, I have a feeling this will be a book that resonates even more deeply as I get older. The Undermining of Twyla and Frank is both a reflection and introspection on long-term relationships, personal identity, and the changes that come with different life stages. Because of that, I can absolutely see myself revisiting it in the future.

Overall, The Undermining of Twyla and Frank is a thoughtful, character-driven follow-up that expands the world introduced in The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy. With distinct voices, mature themes, and a focus on an established relationship, it offers something a little different from traditional romance while still delivering an emotionally satisfying story.
